On June 19, 1865, the news broke among the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, that they were finally free. Some people prayed. Others celebrated. Many left Texas immediately, while others stayed. Freedom took different forms that echoed across the generations with one constant—Juneteenth was a day to remember.
Evocative free verse by poet and activist Sojourner Kincaid Rolle combines with illustrator Alex Bostic's luminous art to honor the solemnity and celebration of Juneteenth from its origins to contemporary observances all over the world. This is an ode to the strength of Black Americans and a call to remember and honor a holiday whose importance reverberates far beyond the borders of Texas.
