Hey, Al

By: Arthur Yorinks
Illustrated by: Richard Egielski

Al, a janitor, and his faithful dog, Eddie, live in a single room on the West Side. They eat together, they work together, they do everything together. So what's the problem?

You name it. Their tiny home is crowded and cramped; their life is an endless struggle. Al and Eddie are totally miserable until a large and mysterious bird offers them a change of fortune.

Transported to a gorgeous island in the sky, they are soon living a life of ease and comfort. But sometimes, they discover, the grass can be a little too green on the other side. After a dramatic escape from their "paradise," both man and dog agree: There really is no place like home.

Alphabatics

A is for ark. But did you know that if you turn an A upside down and round the point out a little, it becomes an ark?

B is for balloon. But did you know that if you blow it up really big, the hole in the middle floats away like a balloon?

In this wonderfully creative alphabet book, letters are pulled, twisted, reversed, and curled until they become part of what they represent. F becomes a fish, and Y becomes a yak!

Young readers will be fascinated with the way the letters evolve into the final creation. They'll never look at the alphabet the same way again!

Rumpelstiltskin

By: Paul O. Zelinsky

Here is one of the Grimms' most popular tales, illustrated in oil paintings by Paul O. Zelinsky. The supple, fresh retelling, based on the Grimms' earliest versions of the story, is vividly brought to life by the splendid detail of the late medieval setting, the tender beauty of the miller's daughter, and the ingenious rendering of the little man himself—an impudent, sympathetic, infuriating creature, as witty and engaging as the age-old tale.

This is a book full of alchemy, for all ages.

The Village of Round and Square Houses

By: Ann Grifalconi

NOT REVIEWED

The village of Tos is like no other village in the world, for in this village the women live in round houses and the men live in square ones. The story of how this came to be is told from the point of view of a young girl who grew up there.

Ann Grifalconi's bold, dynamic art and her rhythmic storytelling make this a perfect book for reading aloud. In both story and art, Ms. Grifalconi has recreated another world.
