Arrow to the Sun

By: Gerald McDermott

Medal Winner
NOT REVIEWED

The Boy, child of the Lord of the Sun, is mocked by the other boys because he seems to have no father. Then one day the Boy comes to a decision: "Mother," he says, "I must look for my father. No matter where he is, I must find him." And thus begins his quest....

With vibrant colors and bold geometric forms, Gerald McDermott brilliantly captures the stylized look of Pueblo Indian art in this Caldecott Award-winning retelling of an ancient legend. A young boy searches for his father, but before he can claim his heritage he must first prove his worthiness by passing through the four ceremonial chambers: the kiva of lions, the kiva of snakes, the kiva of bees, and the kiva of lightning. Striking in its simplicity and grace, Arrow to the Sun vividly evokes the Native American reverence for the
source of all life—the Solar Fire.

Muriel and Tom Feelings, author and illustrator of the Caldecott Honor Book, Maja Means One: Swahili Counting Book, have now collaborated on a companion volume—a Swahili alphabet book.

Mrs. Feelings, who has lived and taught in East Africa, has written a simple but informative text. Selecting twenty-four words, one for each letter of the Swahili alphabet, she gives children a simple lesson in the Swahili language while familiarizing them with some important aspects of traditional East African life.

Award-winning illustrator Tom Feelings has provided a beautifully detailed double-spread painting for each letter, ranging from a traditional greeting between friends to a wedding scene.

A map of African showing the countries where Swahili is spoken is also included.
