Zachary Taylor grew up at a time when Kentucky settlers were fighting to keep their homes. The enemy were the Indians who had decided to fight to keep their hunting grounds. So Zachary grew up to be an experienced Indian fighter, but one who also had Indian friends. When the settlers later fought the British for their freedom, Zachary became a soldier. Later, in the army of his young, new nation, he became General Zachary Taylor and, still later, President of the United States.
