Book Guide

Have you ever imagined yourself perched high on the seat of a swaying covered wagon as you crossed the Oregon Trail? Young Jeff Hunt and his sister Corinth, with their mother, found themselves on just such an adventure when they joined the great Oregon wagon train in 1843.

That spring day, wheels of over a hundred wagons rumbled onto the dusty trail that had been broken by early heroes of the West - Lewis, Clark, and Fremont.

As the days passed, Jeff rode out on a buffalo hunt only to find himself surrounded by hostile Indians, and the quicksand of the North Platte almost forced the Oregon group to turn back. But there were gay and happy times, too, as they danced to the strains of "Skip to My Lou" by the campfires, or listened breathlessly to the tales of mountain men.

But most thrilling of all was to look down from the crest of the Rockies toward what was to be their greatest adventure on the turbulent Columbia River.

We Were There Books
Reviewed by Edward Garboczi
In the 1950s through the early 1960s, the publisher Grossett and Dunlap released a series of 36 well-written and accurate historical novels for children covering a broad range of mostly U.S. and some world history. This was called the We Were There series, since each title follows the pattern “We Were There With” a famous person from history or “On” or “At” some historical event. A fictional boy and sometimes girl are inserted into a specific time in history and meet famous people and experience famous events, making the people and events real to the late-elementary to middle-school reader. These books can also be read aloud to younger children. Our library contains about half the volumes in this series, with more to be acquired.
