For centuries Pete Kalgin's forebears had controlled Bear Cove. Pete's father, Joe Kalgin, kept even hunters out with his wild temper and surly manner. But then one day Bob Nilson came with his family to build a home. For the first time the Kalgin authority was challenged, and Joe had to back down.
The conflict that resulted was inevitable; Joe Kalgin would never accept the newcomers. But Pete did. He not only accepted them, he liked them. For months the tension grew, between the two homesteads and between father and son. Only when the Kalgin home, itself, was threatened did Joe learn, through Pete, to know a friend when he saw one.
Seldom has the great Alaskan wilderness come alive so dramatically as it does in this sensitive story of a boy and is father caught in a changing world.
