The exciting life story of one of the world's best-known explorers is told in this well-written biography of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, famous discoverer of the great ocean between American and Asia.
While a young man, Balboa wanted to go with Columbus on his journey in search of a new route to Asia. Although he was not able to join that expedition, Balboa did sail to what is now South America in 1501, when he was 26 years old. On various expeditions, Balboa explored the northern coast of the continent and helped build the town of Santa Maria, of which he was elected mayor. While searching for gold in the Panama area, Balboa's men visited some Indians who told them of a land of gold on the Other Sea. Balboa, thinking this sea must be the Indian Ocean, led his men through mountainous jungle trails and claimed the sea, its islands, and all the land touching its water for Spain.
The author gives a true picture of Balboa, who devoted his life to adventure, honesty, loyalty, and leadership.
