Lydia was full of imagination; Jean was more concerned with material things; and Mark, well, he was too young to count for very much—but altogether, with Father and Cousin Mary they made just the right kind of family. They loved doing things together, and in these, stories that run through all the months of the year, they have many exciting experiences.
On a snowy January day they rent a sleigh, and to the accompanying sounds of jingling bells and horses' hooves, drive to the country as twilight descends, filling the air with magic and hushed wonder. In spring they help a farmer with sugaring, and one Easter morning they watch the sun rise over Nantasket beach, and later gather eggs and eat chocolate bunnies. So on through the seasons, till it is winter again and they spend Christmas in a little cottage among the dunes and trim their own tree with things from the sea.
Here is a book rich in New England atmosphere and full of happy family relationships.
