Clyde Winton didn't want to go back to school. More than anything he wanted a job in his uncle's lumber camp. He could see himself riding the logs downriver in the spring drive, his peavey ready for action, his spikes . . .
So, when the offer of a job actually came, he set off with high hopes, only to find that the job was that of cook's helper.
However, Clyde stayed and soon found that even for a "cookie" life at a lumber camp was a series of exciting, puzzling and satisfying experiences.
And when the year was over he had come to realize that though cutting the white pine and riding the "river of wooden horses" was exciting, conserving the forests could be even more rewarding.
