The Space Age becomes a very real and exciting project in the lives of Abercrombie, Benjamin, and Christopher when they see the seven astronauts on television and learn abut the essay contest on space at school.

Soon the whole town is caught up in the Space Age—even Grandma, reluctantly—as the triplets become enthusiastically involved with their "Basic Research," the Space Club, and a model rocket which they build from an old hot water heater.
