From the instant that Sally wakes up, to the last breathless moment that night, as she stands happily between Andrew and Pierre, there is excitement in the air. . . .This is the story of all that happens in one eventful day.
A gay party has been planned to celebrate the return of Captain Patterson and Pierre on The Fair American, for the ship is expected before nightfall. Pierre is returning after having been restored to his real position as a young French nobleman, and Sally is thrilled at the prospect of seeing him in all his new elegance, but Andrew does not relish the idea at all when he compares the poor showing his rough ways will make in contrast to Pierre's courtly manners.
There are invitations to be given so Sally, on her fine horse Meknes and Andrew on stout-hearted Peacock start off. Before they leave Sally notices that Uncle Joseph is in a dark, preoccupied mood. He has good reason to be anxious as Sally and Andrew learn when they are suddenly swept into a whirlwind of adventure.
The wonderful day draws to a close, Sally, Andrew and Pierre are reunited at last and Sally, now on the threshold of young womanhood, promises her heart to one of her two dear friends—forever.
