The white dove had been flying for a long time over the ocean. She was growing very tired, and her wings were beating more and more slowly. Suddenly, far below, she spied a tiny, round island. But was it an island? Or was it only a rock jutting up in the sea?
Whatever it was, she knew she must alight to rest. But she had perched there hardly long enough to sigh or to coo when she cried, "Why, this island is moving!"
The "island," of course, proves to be a turtle, and he and the white dove quickly become friends and travel along together, chatting happily. Then a sudden storm arises, and the companions are abruptly separated. Turtle disappears down under the swells, and Dove flies higher and higher up through the clouds toward the sun.
Children will delight in reading of how Dove finds a real island where she can fulfill her wish to settle down, and of the eventual happy reunion of the two friends—and their families. Don Freeman writes and draws with a sure touch; this quiet story with its soft blue and gray pictures has a beguiling quality all its own.
