Jane Elizabeth sat in her garden on a warm summer afternoon. All of her garden friends were asleep or away—Lady Humming-bird Moth, Mrs. Hop-toad, Grasshopper Grey, and the other amazing creatures who started their lives in one form and then turned into something quite different.
It was very still, and Jane Elizabeth had almost given up seeing anyone at all, when a tiny gauze dress, just big enough for a fairy, fell into her lap.
"Katydid!" said someone sharply.
"What did she do?" asked Jane Elizabeth.
"Katydid change her dress."
So it was Katydid's fourth and last dress that had fallen into her lap!
_______
Boys and girls will follow Jane Elizabeth's discoveries with interest and amusement, and at the same time they will learn something about one of the most fascinating phases of nature study—the transformations in the lives of the insects and small water animals. They will see how the water dragon turns into a dragon fly, the caterpillar turns into a moon moth, the tadpole turns into a frog, etc.
