Book Guide

IF THE PARKERS hadn't usually been so noisy, Mr. Jefferson—their next-door neighbor—would never have noticed how quiet they were on the sad day when Mr. Parker's company exchanged its trolleys for busses! This meant no job for Mr. Parker, because Mr. Parker was not a man who would give up a lifetime of driving a trolley for a new-fangled bus that didn't even run on a track. In fact, Mr. Parker showed his deep-dyed devotion to trolleys by accepting the trolley he had driven, instead of a month's salary. What happened then was the definite result of allowing the Parker children to sit in on the family conference that was to decide what the Parkers were to do. Even grumpy Mr. Jefferson took the children's suggestion in his stride—and every young reader will revel in it. Because—of course—what the Parkers did was to move into the trolley car.

Where to put the trolley caused a little trouble, but Mr. Parker and Mr. Jefferson soon ironed out the difficulties of transporting it to the country, complete with the Parker family, beds, chairs, china closet and birdcage. Mr. Jefferson's last-minuted decision to go along also was a very lucky thing for the Parkers, for Aunt Hannah, their new neighbor—and for Mr. Jefferson himself.

This gay story begins happily and moves happily along to the very end. Adventures with chickens, with cherry-picking, with Bess, the cow, sound just like everyday country life, but add the jolly Parkers and their trolley car—and you have a pretty special summer on a farm. No wonder the Parkers never wanted to leave. How everything got fixed up, including Mr. Jefferson makes a fine surprise ending and just what you would expect from this engaging family.
