When Uncle Analdas, the old, old Rabbit, predicted, "I hold it's goin' to be a tough winter, and needn't nobody bother to deny it," all the Rabbit Hill animals said he was just getting old and gloomy. But, as usual, Uncle Analdas was right. Thanksgiving brought ice, a food shortage, and the beginning of a hard season. And then, when the "Folks" went away to Bluegrass country for the winter, and left a neglectful Caretaker and a mean Dog in charge, every dweller of Rabbit Hill knew that Uncle's prophecy was coming true in more than one way!
All of the entertaining little animals of the woods and fields of the Connecticut Hill are here again: Little Georgie, filled with bustle and excitement, Father, the perfect Southern gentleman, and Porky, Phewie, Mother, Mole, and all the rest. And this time Willie Fieldmouse, loyal to the Hill to the last, and Uncle Analdas, a hero of the situation, play very important roles in the winter drama.
There is a tenderness and humor in the way Mr. Lawson has portrayed the little people who burrow and scamper about his hill. Both children and their parents will find sheer delight in reading the story, and there is increasing delight as page after page reveals a perfect combination of Mr. Lawson's text and most beautiful drawings.
