For the eighth of the Regions of America group, Mr. DeWitt has turned his attention to that picturesque section of the United States, the southern highlands. Some of the most colorful of American folklore and scenery are found in this part of our country. The terrain is beautiful—mountainous, heavily wooded, spacious, and sometimes wild. Because parts of it have been very isolated, there are many songs, country dances, and ballads which are very close to the originals of English and Scottish ancestors, having been passed down from generation to generation. Many distinctive and beautiful handcrafts and trades have developed.
Mr. DeWitt's fourteen full-color, and many black and white, pictures catch all the high spots of color and beauty, all the characteristic scenes, activities, and little details that convey the highly individual flavor of the region and its inhabitants. With the sprightly story told by May McNeer (who also did the stories of California and the Great Plains), the result is the colorful, comprehensive book that is now expected in this distinguished group.
