Book Guide

Davy Crockett, famous bear hunter, frontiersman and “coonskin Congressman,” is one of the most colorful of American folk heroes. Born in Tennessee back when frontier life was still rugged, Davy was mighty fond of fishing and hunting but he wasn’t too fond of school. So he was happy and excited when his father hired him out to Jacob Siler to help drive a herd of cattle back east to Virginia.

But he was a frightened boy indeed when he learned that Siler did not intend to let him return to Tennessee. So, in the deep of night, he ran away and struggled through a blinding snowstorm to reach an old friend of his father, who helped Davy get back to his home and family.

This is only one of the exciting adventures of young Crockett, who grew up to lead his people in Indian wars, to represent them at Washington and finally to die heroically fighting the Mexicans in the struggle for Texas independence at the famous Battle of the Alamo.

With the magic of Enid Meadowcroft’s pen, young Crockett comes alive and inspires a new generation of American youth with his famous slogan: “Be always sure you’re right — then go ahead.”
