Book Guide

Little Annie Moses was only eight when she stood on a chair and gingerly took down her father's long rifle from the pegs where it hung over the hearth. And no one was more surprised than she, when she brought down her first game with one clean shot through the head. After that, Annie became the family hunter, for life was hard in the wilderness of Ohio in the 1860's, and there were a great many little Moses children to feed.

In those years Annie developed the uncanny shooting skill that later took her to the heights of showmanship. When she met Frank Butler, the famous shot, she won a shooting match with him. They were married, and Annie became Frank's partner in his shooting act, under the name of Annie Oakley.

From then on, Annie's fame grew, not only because of her remarkable marksmanship, but also because she was a square shooter in every way. She and Frank joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West, at that time the greatest show in the United States. Annie became the star of the show, and when it was taken to England in the year of Queen Victoria's Jubilee, Annie soon had all London at her feet.

This dramatic story of the little backwoods girl who shot her way to fame takes the reader behind the scenes in the lives of show people and also reflects one of the most colorful periods in our history.
