The Soul of the Indian
Charles Alexander Eastman
This estimate of Indian character is especially valuable from the fact that the author is himself an Indian. Dr. Eastman has attempted to show us the true Indian, freed from the prejudices and legends which prevail in the minds of most white men. The chapters discuss among other things The Great Mystery, The Family Leader, Barbarism and Ceremonial and Symbolic Worship. The book is written strongly and convincingly, and is interesting both psychologically and ethnologically.
"It is an indispensable book to the man who wants to know the soul of the American Indian. It has the advantage of having been written by a full-blooded Sioux, a man who is thoroughly acquainted with the life and teaching of the Indians and who has also come into contact with our modern educational world and can see things through the eyes of an educated man." — Boston Herald.
