This fine volume by Mr. Altsheler on the Civil War deals with the great crisis of the Union in the West, the siege of Vicksburg and the Battle of Chickamauga. The chief figures in the story are Dick Mason and his friends, who appear in the other volumes of the series. For the lover of historical fiction there are no other volumes written today by any living author that more accurately portray the actual happenings of that trying period in the history of our country. The sketches of the great Generals who brought the Northern Army to victory, and of the brave leaders of the Southern forces, are made with striking faithfulness to historical detail. The series is absorbingly interesting to the older readers as well as to those of the younger generation.
