The adventures of Ulysses, on his return from the siege of Troy, continue the story of the Iliad, and make the second volume of Church's stories from olden times for young people of today. Of the many retellings of this great story, Church's is the easiest for younger children to follow. It keeps close to the Greek spirit, but it simplifies plot and phrasing to the understanding of boys and girls, who are to hear the complicated tale for the first time.
And the first time should not wait longer than the second or third year of school. Ulysses on his raft, Nausicaa playing ball, the Cyclops, Circe, the Sirens—all these figures of fame are part of our literature to-day, and should become part of every child's imaginative life.
