Book Guide

"On a midsummer night when the moon is full, hardly anyone wants to go to bed—least of all a little girl who misses her mother.

And the little girl's daddy understands just how she feels. He doesn't try to make her stay in bed—instead he brings her down to the living room where only one light is on and everything is a new shape and size. Then he takes her for a walk around the garden. Far away a train whistle sounds, the lightning bug glows, and the moon is reflected on the shiny black pond where a family of white ducks are asleep.

They sit by the pond a long time and the little girl sniffs the lilacs while the night wind ruffles her hair—and her eyes are dreamy and solemn at last.

It has been a night for a little girl to remember.
