Book Guide

October marks the beginning of the dry season in the Everglades of Florida. To the starving alligator of Saw Grass Hole the end of the rains and hurricanes meant food, but her pond was as empty of life as it had been since June. Not a fish, a turtle, or a mammal had yet come her way.

All summer the rugged grasses of the Everglades stand in water a foot or two deep. But in the bright full sun the river begins to dry up, and bass and garfish, bullfrogs and snapping turtles, struggle toward the alligator ponds. Like her ancestors before her, the alligator of Saw Grass Hole depends upon these migrations to end her desperate fasts. And for thousands of winters the creatures of the glades have survived the long drought in the ‘gator holes, among the few remaining pockets of water in the parched land.

Jean George gives us a vivid and authentic picture of this delicately balanced world. Adrina Zanazanian’s illustrations reflect the lush beauty of the Everglades during the season of change.
