Book Guide

A wandering minstrel adopts a sweet-natured dragon pup, and his songs flow more easily and joyfully than ever before because he has something to love.  The minstrel and his dragon pup, whom he names Lucky, are inseparable.  They wander the countryside entertaining people, earning their kep, and enjoying their very special friendship.  But when a wicked traveling showman kidnaps the pup to use in his show, the two come to grief.  The loyal minstrel searches for his beloved dragon until his journey takes him even into the king's palace and the prince's chamber.

Rosemary Sutcliff's beautifully told story reads as if it were a ballad passed down by minstrels who lived once upon a time.  The class illustrations by award-winning artist Emma Chichester Clark perfectly suit the legendary quality of the tale.
