During the Civil War, it was not uncommon for army units to have live animals as mascots for their troops. These mascots helped lift spirits and build loyalty among the soldiers. One of the most famous mascots in the Civil War was Old Abe, a remarkable eagle from Wisconsin.
Captured from his nest near Park Falls, Wisconsin, while still quite young, the bird was eventually taken to Eau Clair. Nicknamed "Old Abe" after President Lincoln, the eagle becomes mascot of the Eighth Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Beloved by foot soldier and officer alike, Old Abe rallies his comrades through numerous skirmishes and engagements, soaring overhead with wings outstretched. When his battlefield exploits become larger than life and extolled throughout the country, even the Confederates know he's a force to be reckoned with and make the bird a target!
Acclaimed storyteller Kathy-jo Wargin brings this story of a remarkable bird to vivid life. Artist Laurie Caple's original paintings provide depth and atmosphere, while emphasizing the majesty of Old Abe, Wisconsin's heroic bird.
