THIS CLASSIC work on nature study, now in its 24th edition has been used as a text, reference book, and general source of information by hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, and parents.
The living subjects treated throughly and enthusiastically by Mrs. Comstock include birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, insects, flowers, weeds, flowerless plants, cultivated crop plants, and trees. Her treatment of inanimate nature covers streams, water and water formations, soil and soil conservation, crystals, minerals, magnetism, the stars, and the weather. All in all, about seven hundred separate subjects in nature are discussed and bibliographies are provided. Each discussion, with its lesson, is a thorough treatment of a particular organism or natural phenomenon and contains a leading idea to be emphasized by the teacher and a description of the best method of developing the idea through personal observation.
The individual organism is examined in its environment; details of its life history and relation to its world are given. In this way, the reader gains a knowledge and enjoyment of the common forms of nature.
Handbook of Nature Study has received the widest praise in journals and periodicals both abroad and in the United States.
"No book in the field provides anything comparable with the rich and specific suggestions as to how things in natural science may be taught."—Nature Magazine.
"We cannot imagine a better guide to sensible and scientific nature study."—Independent.
"...Mrs. Comstock has admirably accomplished her purpose."—Literary Digest.
"A well-illustrated handbook containing a vast amount of material helpful to teachers and parents and covering a wide field of elementary instruction."—Book Review Digest.
