Book Guide

"The Guns of Shiloh," while in itself a complete and independent story, contains many of the characters who figure in "The Guns of Bull Run." Dick Mason, the hero, fights for the North, while his cousin, Harry Kenton, hero of "The Guns of Bull Run," is for the South.

Dick has a share in the battle of Mill Spring under General Thomas and then is sent with a message to General Buell. Afterward he is captured by Southern scouts. In the shock of the mighty battle of Shiloh, Dick is forgotten and rejoins his command. This book gives a vivid description of the defeat of the South on the first day of the terrible battle, then the arrival of Buell with a fresh army and the victory on the second day. Dick is in the heart of the fighting. A stirring story and a splendid true picture of the Civil War.
