Linda and David Burch received their nicest Christmas present in the middle of the summer! But the gift of a donkey and a cart was only the beginning of a wonderful series of adventures that lasted all through their vacation.
They trained their donkey to behave exactly as they wanted him to. Then they trained a baby pig to be their pet and perform wonderful tricks. A little old hermit who lived in the woods helped to brighten their days and bring them adventures. It was a wonderful summer on a wonderful farm, where a pig jumped through a hoop, where the cakes were made with goose eggs, and where a simple picnic became a gala party.
The author has introduced each chapter with an original song, pleasant in melody, and simple enough for the beginning musician to play himself.
Lois Lenski's sprightly pictures add gaiety to both the story and the songs. The Donkey Cart records a happy summer, and reading it will be a happy adventure, too.
