Caroline Pickersgill lived in Baltimore with her mother and grandmother during the War of 1812. To support themselves they sewed flags and pennants for ships that sailed into the harbor from all over the world. And they made the huge flags that flew over Fort McHenry and inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner."
Here is a charming (and true) children's story about a little person who, in helping her widowed mother, became a part of our nation's history.
