Long ago on the north shore of the Mediterranean Sea there lived a people who made vases, statues, and buildings that can still be seen, and that are still thought to be among the finest ever made. These people were the Greeks.
The Golden Age of Greek art was between 450and 400 B.C. As time went on, the Greeks were conquered by other peoples. These borrowed many Greek ideas, and especially Greek art, until finally the Greek ideas of beauty spread all over Europe. Even today ancient Greek art is loved, admired, and copied everywhere.
Some of the loveliest things the Greeks created are pictured in this book. The text tells something of the way of life that the art reflects, and gives some of the theories and techniques that helped Greek artists perfect their work.
