Here you have all that is needed to make a good story—
- Two sisters of contrasting nature: twelve-year-old Ricky, high-spirited, fun-loving, and impatient; her older sister, Sybil, thoughtful and gentle and possessed of a surprising courage.
- An endearing colt, Star, who plays tricks on the girls and even follows them into the house.
- The fun of independence: the girls' mother is dead and Sybil and Ricky cook and keep house on their own.
- A dramatic atmosphere: their father is away at war. Traitors and thieves are everywhere. Adventurous Ricky longs—and tries—to join the army!
- Danger: Sybil rides by night to warn the neighboring farms and villages that the enemy is approaching.
The time may be 1777, the place York County, and the enemy the Redcoats, but the feelings of the girls are the same as those of today. Sybil Ludington's ride was a real episode and Erick Berry has used imagination and skill in bring it so vividly to life.
