Book Guide

This is a story of two families of children, with a couple of sailing boats, on a lake. There is a camp on an island, disputed by the two parties, the four who occupy the island, sailing thither in the Swallow, and two girls, who had previously camped there and sail the centreboard dinghy, Amazon. The idea is a sort of nursery Riddle of the Sands. This is a book which can be recommended with every confidence as a spontaneous and thoroughly successful effort to write a book about children for children and for their parents, guardians, cousins and aunts.

Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome
Reviewed by Sara Masarik
Swallows and Amazons, written by Arthur Ransome in 1930, is one of the most perfect children’s adventure novels I have ever read. My only regret is in taking so darn long to get to it.
