The story of Susan B. Anthony is dramatic, full of warmth and humor, and gives an exciting picture of a dynamic personality and a remarkable achievement. For "Susan the Champion" as she was called, blazed the trail for all American women and made possible most of the privileges enjoyed by them today—personal freedom, co-education, active participation in business, politics, and the professions.
One hundred and twenty-seven years ago, when Susan B. Anthony was born, women were considered an inferior sex. There were no public schools open to girls and the only work they could engage in was teaching, factory labor or housework.
Quiet little Susan determined to change all that. Inspired by Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott who were trying to stir women out of their apathetic state, she became the champion of women's rights, one whose ardor never forsook her and whose courage never recognized defeat. She traveled from city to city talking before audiences who jeered her "revolutionary" ideas. When she was arrested in 1872 for casting a vote in the elections and fined one hundred dollars which she refused to pay, she was subjected to one of the most unjust and sensational trials in history. She died fourteen years before women finally received the vote in 1920.
In recognition of the courage with which she faced abuse and ridicule for more than fifty years, Governor Dewey of New York set aside February 15th in her honor. On that day in 1947, the unpretentious brick house in Rochester which was her home for more than forty years was opened as a memorial to the pioneer suffragette.
