ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY is the story of one of the greatest navigation projects in history—the realization of a dream of centuries to tame the waters of the great St. Lawrence River and make it possible for ocean vessels to sail from the Atlantic to Great Lakes ports. It is the story of a vast power project—harnessing the river to provide cheap electricity for homes and industries in the province of Ontario and the states of New York and Vermont.
It is a magnificent story of men and machines. Men—the dreamers and planners, the statesmen, the engineers, foremen, truck drivers, carpenters, electricians, mechanics, welders, powdermen, divers, laborers. Machines—the diesel shovels, dredges, churn drills, bulldozers, big-bladed scrapers, gantry cranes, draglines, hydraulic jacks.
But above all it is the story of co-operation between two great nations—Canada and the United States—in constructing a marvel of navigation and power, the greatest peacetime effort of two nations in history.
