Over three thousand years ago a young Jewish girl of Palestine became the spiritual leader of her people, a prophetess and the first woman judge. She, with Barak, a fellow townsman, conquered the Canaanite enemy and she celebrated the victory in song. The campaign she led and of which she sang was one of the steps in uniting the twelve tribes of Israel into one nation. The girl's name was Deborah and she has been called the Hebrew Joan of Arc.
Song of Deborah tells the story of this remarkable, dedicated girl who was known as a Wise Woman throughout her land. It also tells the story of her village and her people—of the maiden Jael, her best friend who killed Sisera, hated leader of the enemy; of Jonathan, the restless shepherd boy who longed to become a great soldier; of Lapidoth, Deborah's dashing, red-haired husband, murdered by the Canaanites; and of Barak, the leader of the small, battered Israeli forces who came to Deborah for guidance and inspiration in the last, decisive battle.
This novel, based on fact, gives a vivid picture of the unusual Deborah, strong and wise beyond her years, and it brings to life two short chapters of the Bible. It ends with Deborah's exultant song which has been called the finest masterpiece of Hebrew poetry. From the dust jacket
