When they were growing up in Charleston, South Carolina, Sarah and Angelina Grimke couldn't avoid the fact that slavery was a part of their lives. Slaves served them their meals, looked after them when they were small, and came whenever they called. But unlike the rest of their family, Sarah and Angelina grew to hate slavery — so much so that they both eventually moved to the North. There, in the 1830s, the two sisters became famous for speaking out against slavery and racism and for speaking in support of equal rights for all women.
In Sisters Against Slavery, popular author Stephanie Sammartino McPherson tells the story of the trailblazing Grimke sisters and the inspiring lives they led.
