Each Saturday afternoon the six Tuttle cousins met: one weekend at the home of Laurel, Tressy and Molly, and the next weekend at the big white house of Julie, Rich and Ginny Mae. In the Kentucky hill country of forty years ago, the lives of these youngsters revolved around the wonder and excitement of each weekly visit.
To reach their cousins' house meant passing Johnson's Crossing, where the children always waited until a thundering L.&N. train roared by. Then there was the intriguing house of the "Beg-Pardon" Smiths, who owned an automobile and a player piano: a trip to Mr. Bertie's store that stocked everything from "cheese to crinoline" but housed, in particular, a talking machine: and, on one trip, a dinosaur's footprint (for that's what Rich called it" in the dust at Stinson's Corner. And at Aunt Callie's house all six could bump down the steps on the hall carpet, which they romantically dubbed the "President's Special," or watch Rich as he put Katy, the musical mule, through her paces.
Recapturing all the flavor of a warm and wholesome era in American history, Saturday Cousins is a refreshing excursion into the days before television, radio and the superhighway that youngsters just learning to read will find captivating.
