July 8, 1776, the day on which the Declaration of Independence was first read to the people of Philadelphia, was also an important one in the life of young Jonathan McNair. The reader first meets Jonathan, the only fictional character in RING FOR LIBERTY, making his way to Mr. Dunlap's printing shop, where the Declaration is on press. Jonathan finds the activities of Mr. Dunlap's shop quite exciting. But they aren't half as exciting as the invitation of his grandfather, Andrew McNair, to accompany him to the Pennsylvania State House, where McNair is the bellringer and where the Declaration of Independence is about to be read. Of course, Jonathan goes along without suspecting in the least that he is about to play an important role in the day's events. What Jonathan accomplishes so successfully is the high spot of the story, and it will delight boys and girls who like to see other small people doing big deeds.
