Book Guide
Merry Primrose Ramsay was a little English girl almost seven years old, who came to this country because of the war. Her adventures with her little cousin Jerry are filled with humor and excitement on a seven-year-old level. There are moments of pathos. The puppy, for instance, ran away with Merry's ball of wool and raveled out most of the scarf she was knitting for Daddy in England. But Merry's birthday was a great success. Her aunt found primroses for her to pick on that day as she had always done at home. To be sure, these were not wild primroses in an English wood, but they were much better than none at all.
Miss Haywood's tales for little children, illustrated by herself, have a lovely quality of reality. Young readers can easily imagine themselves doing the very things they are reading about.
