He was born into a prominent and wealthy family. His life was luxurious. He was widely traveled. He thought and wrote as a Greek of the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. He was very much a man of his time. Yet, Plato is still recognized today as one of the most profound thinkers in all human history. His writings are still widely read and studied. Their reasoning and insight still astonish us. There is no doubt that Plato influenced the course of human thought down to this day.
