Orris and Timble: The Beginning

This book, with short chapters, and very few words on each page, reminded me of the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel. The story itself is simple and straightforward, a mirroring of the story of Androcles and the Lion, but there’s a subtext that speaks to adults as well as children. It’s a story and a subtext about friendship and adventure and choices and risk taking, but I won’t go much farther than that. You and your children can pull your own ideas and images from the book.

Between the author's sweet, simple, slyly funny narrative and the artist's clever, engaging use of personality and detail (like the image on a sardine can, which proves quite important), it's the irresistible tale of a solitary rat who, against all reason, comes to the rescue of a young owl in trouble. "Make the good and noble choice!" advises the Sardine King, and it leads to a beautiful friendship as predator-species and prey-species animals bond over a love for storytelling.
Orris and Timble: The Beginning
A simple tale about looking beneath surfaces that’s as sweet as butterscotch candy.

There’s more to this simple story than meets the eye at first, but young children will enjoy the personalities and gentle humor. Slightly older siblings will enjoy reading it aloud to them. Grownups will be looking for the next volume in the series, for this one is just The Beginning.
Bottom Line: a sweet and cozy read with a strong moral core.
