Maybe she shouldn't have bothered to bring her red umbrella. It was such a nice day. But you can never tell, she thought, and she was right, because by and by it began to rain. Before she knew it, there was quite a crowd under the red umbrella: a little dog, two kittens, a woolly lamb, three little pigs, and a big wet bear. And other animals besides. As each new arrival crept under the red umbrella, it grew a little bigger. It was always big enough to keep everyone safe from the rain. In fact, it was always just the right size.
And Robert Bright's book is just the right size, too, perfect for the hands and laps of brand-new readers. The simple vocabulary will be easy for children, and the excitement of reading alone at last will be enhanced by the merry, delicate drawings that trace this gay procession through the rain.
