Long before the white men landed, a young Indian boy named Yellow Feather hunted and fished in the New England woods. This is the life story of the son of the Wampanoag tribe's high chief who grew up to the sounds of war cries and beating drums and to the sights of painted warriors and blazing campfires.
The young Indian soon proved his own strength by saving his mother and other women and children from a savage bear. Thereafter, he was called Massasoit, the brave one.
Years passed, Massasoit became chief of the Wampanoags and united neighboring tribes, bringing peace to the vast woodlands.
When news of strange, white-skinned men reacher Massasoit, he went to meet with their leaders. Offering friendship, he smoked the pipe of peace. Soon the Indians taught the starving Pilgrims how to plant, hunt, and survive in the new land.
Their first Thanksgiving was a tribute to Massasoit's pledge of friendship which he upheld until death.
