One day Caddie and the other children were playing "I Spy" in the barn when they came upon a secret hoard of watermelons, and after the season, too! They had a wonderful party in the hay loft, but the consequences of this adventure were most unexpected!
This is only one of the escapades of that lively family of Woodlawn children who lived on the Wisconsin border in 1860. Caddie herself was the liveliest of the little pioneers, but all the children contributed their share to these stories full of fun and amusing situations. We hear of Warren's gift of game to the preacher, Caddie's purchase of a widow's bonnet, Emma's part in a Medicine Show, of the gala Independence Day celebration when Robert wins a logrolling contest and Caddie ruins her new dress. In this family of six active children, each one is a distinct and lovable person.
Whether or not Caddie Woodlawn is an old friend already from the popular Newbery Medal book, every boy and girl will love her in this new story collection.
