The true and thrilling story of Madeleine de Verchères and her two brothers who, with a garrison of only seven people, defended their home fort against the Indians. Their father was serving under the great Governor de Frontenac in Quebec, and their mother had been called to Montreal on urgent business. As the eldest of the seigneur's family, Madeleine, still in her early teens, was in command when the Indians appeared.
Although it is more than two hundred and fifty years since the Iroquis came to Verchères, the story of the steadfast courage and clever strategy of these young people lives on as one of the most gallant episodes in the history of North America.
A bronze statue of Madeleine de Verchères stands on guard above the St. Lawrence River, commemorating the heroic feat of the sister and brothers.
The illustrations by Bruce Adams—17 full pages and more than 20 spots—throw a vivid light on the exciting times in which the Verchères family lived.
