Kävik, part malamute, part wolf, had been trained since puppyhood for the day he led Charlie One-Eye's dog team to victory in the North American Sled Dog Derby at Fairbanks. Then George C. Hunter, a Seattle man with extensive mining and fishing interests in Alaska, bought the dog to send home as a souvenir of the North. The small plane carrying Kävik crashed in a snow-filled valley during a blizzard. The iron cage holding him was thrown clear of the wreckage, but the dog, severely injured, was still a prisoner.
After three days, fifteen-year-old Andy Evans discovered the crash site. He pulled the prostrate dog from the cage to put him out of misery, but when Kävik looked at the boy with steady, yellow eyes, Andy put down his gun and the course of Kävik's life changed forever. An affection developed between them that would survive their separation several months later and bring Kävik back over two thousand miles to the young boy he had chosen for his master.
