Ten-year-old David and his father, as long as David can remember, have lived up on the mountain; and with the woods and wild things and their two violins, they have been so very happy that David has not missed other human companionship. Then a change comes and the lovable little boy is left to the care of strangers, gruff, stern farmer folk in whom the warmth of kindness is buried deep. He can tell them nothing about himself—he is "just David"—but just David comes to fill a very big place in their lives, as well as in a very pretty romance; and in the end David learns who he really is, so that he need no longer be "just David."
