Jim Beckwourth was a trapper and mountain man—one of the best of them. He accompanied William Ashley in 1823, knew and worked with Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, William Sublette, and others who pushed westward. Here, for the first time, is Beckwourth's own story for young readers.
All mountain men fought Indians, hunted buffalo and beaver, and traveled thousands of miles through unexplored territory. Beckwourth also lived with the Crows and became a chief of their tribe. His experiences are as amazing as any fiction could be.
Harold Felton, who has written about Paul Bunyan, Mike Fink, and Pecos Bill, now presents the adventures of another American hero. He has based his narrative on Beckwourth's autobiography which was published in 1856. Extensive reading and research rounded out this story of a skillful, courageous man who helped break the first trails through the West.
