Jim Beckwourth was a trapper and mountain man—one of the best of them. He accompanied William Ashley in 1823, knew and worked with Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, William Sublette, and others who pushed westward. Here, for the first time, is Beckwourth's own story for young readers.

He has based his narrative on Beckwourth's autobiography which was published in 1856.
