What is a mother? In simple, expressive language, a South African child describes his, from morning—My mother is like the sun rising . . . lighting up the dark corners and gently coaxing us awake—until bedtime—Then, as the blanket of night spreads out over the world, with a bright moon above, my mother wraps us up carefully and with a kiss and goodnight puts us to sleep. As he does so, we learn much about Jafta's daily life.
Young children will identify immediately with Jafta's timeless description, and readers of any age are likely to find their own fond memories awakened by Hugh Lewin's lyrical, evocative prose and Lisa Kopper's glowing illustrations.
