Golda Meir early showed the determination that was to mark her entire career. When her Russian immigrant parents refused to let her continue her schooling in Milwaukee because she was a girl, 14-year-old Golda ran away to distant Denver. When she and her young, scholarly husband emigrated to the rough, underdeveloped land that was then Palestine, Golda Meir quickly became the spokesman for her kibbutz. Being a wife and mother could not satisfy her yearning for greater challenge and achievement and in the years that followed—years of rising Jewish strength and increasing conflict with both the British and the Arabs—Golda Meir moved upward in the ranks of Jewish leadership.
